Baringo Birding

Day 1: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha​

From Nairobi, head north-west into the Great Rift Valley.  Along the way, stop on the escarpment for sweeping views of the Rift Valley before taking a walk in Gatamaiyo Forest to see what birds are living there.  Arrive at Lake Naivasha in time for lunch.  Later in the afternoon take a boat ride on the lake when the bird life really comes alive.

Day 2: Lake Naivasha to Lake Baringo

Wake early to walk along the shores of Lake Naivasha before leaving for Lake Baringo.  On the way, cross the equator into the northern hemisphere.  Stop in the forest along the way for an hour or two walking.  Arrive at Lake Baringo in the afternoon and go on another bird-watching walk.

Day 3: Lake Baringo to Kerio Valley

With 450 species of birds, Lake Baringo is a birdwatcher’s paradise.  Begin the morning with an early boat trip on the lake to get the best bird-viewing opportunities.  The lake is serene at this time of day and the peace takes all your cares away.  Afterwards, begin the journey to the Kerio Valley, stopping at the Kerio River on the way for a bird walk.  On arrival at the accommodation, perched on the hillside, take another nature walk.

Day 4: Kerio Valley to Nakuru

A morning walk up to the escarpment to see what birds you can spot starts the day before starting the journey back eastwards.  Nakuru is Kenya’s fourth largest city, yet bustles with all the urgency of a country town.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park

Spend a full day game driving around Lake Nakuru National Park, home to two special animals: the black rhino and Rothschild’s giraffe.

Day 6: Nakuru to Aberdare

Early in the morning, set off for another national park; this time it’s Aberdare.  To get there, drive up to Nyahururu, Kenya’s highest town and the location of Thomson’s Falls.  Go for a short walk to view the waterfall and hippo pond before continuing into the national park.  Hilly and forested, Aberdare National Park offers a completely different environment to what you have experienced the rest of the week..

​Day 7: Aberdare National Park

Spend the full day in the national park exploring the animal and bird life.  The morning starts with a game drive and later in the day you can go for a walk with the rangers through the forests.

Day 8: Aberdare to Nairobi
Head out at dawn for a morning game drive to see the nocturnal animals and birds retire for the day and the diurnal creatures wake up.  This is a magical time of day to see myriad species of birds.  Return to the accommodation for a hearty brunch before heading back to Nairobi.
